Bangla Shasya Bima: The State Govt. stands by the Farmers affected by the Floods

Bangla Shasya Bima: Due to continuous rainfall and the release of water from the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), several areas in the lower Damodar basin of West Bengal have been flooded. Districts such as Howrah, Hooghly, East and West Midnapore, and West Burdwan are among the affected regions where a flood situation has arisen. Although the situation is gradually improving, the persistent rains and floods have caused significant damage to paddy cultivation. According to information provided by the state government, nearly 200,000 hectares of paddy fields have been damaged. However, to get a more accurate assessment of the damage, a few more days are needed. The full extent of the losses will become clearer once the water completely recedes.

A few days ago, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the flood-affected areas and assured the farmers that the government stands with them. Following this, the state’s agriculture department has taken swift steps to provide compensation to the affected farmers. Measures are being taken to ensure that the benefits of Bangla Shasya Bima scheme reach the farmers affected by the floods.

In the meantime, Agriculture Minister Shovan Chatterjee has already held a meeting with the state’s agriculture secretary, Onkar Singh Meena, and other senior officials to review the extent of the damage. It has been instructed that all farmers in West Bengal should benefit from the Bangla Shasya Bima scheme, and farmers affected by the floods should be provided with the Bangla Shasya Bima benefits without delay. A deadline of September 30 has been set for this.

Farmers who are not currently enrolled in Bangla Shasya Bima scheme but have been affected by the floods will also be eligible for this benefit. Such farmers must be brought under the scheme by September 30, as instructed by Agriculture Minister Shovan Chatterjee.

It is also worth noting that to ensure all affected farmers receive Bangla Shasya Bima benefits, the agriculture department is planning to set up multiple camps in the 12 flood-affected districts of South Bengal. In addition to compensation, the department is committed to supporting farmers by offering alternative crops due to the destruction of paddy fields. For this, pulses and mustard seeds will be distributed to farmers as alternatives during the upcoming Rabi season. The task has been ordered to be completed by October 15. Apart from paddy farmers, vegetable farmers have also been severely impacted by the floods. The state government has assured them that they will also receive support through the Bangla Shasya Bima scheme.
