After enduring the intense heat of summer, the monsoon season is gradually approaching. This Kharif crop season brings great news for farmers from the central cabinet. According to the decision of the central cabinet, the minimum support price (MSP) for a total of 14 Kharif crops, including paddy, ragi, jowar, bajra, and maize, has been approved for an increase. What are Kharif crops?
Kharif crops are primarily identified as monsoon crops. These crops are cultivated at the beginning of the monsoon season. They are mainly sown in June and harvested in September-October. Some of the famous Kharif crops produced in India include rice, maize, and cotton.
The central government’s decision on Kharif crops
After the recent Lok Sabha elections, Narendra Modi has been sworn in as Prime Minister for the third time. Under his leadership, a new central cabinet has been formed. Shortly after forming the government for the third time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the central treasury for the benefit of farmers. On Wednesday, a meeting of the newly formed central cabinet was held under his chairmanship. In this meeting, with the consent of the central ministers, it was decided to increase the MSP (Minimum Support Price) of 14 Kharif crops including rice, sorghum, millet, ragi, and cotton.
After the cabinet meeting, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw held a press conference. In that conference, he stated, “Some very important decisions have been taken in today’s cabinet meeting. Among these are decisions made for the welfare of farmers. The cabinet has approved the MSP for 14 crops for the Kharif season. The new MSP for rice has been approved at 2,300 rupees per quintal, which is 117 rupees more than last year. For cotton, the MSP has been increased by 501 rupees.” The Union Minister also mentioned that the central cabinet has approved the 76,000 crore rupees Wadhawan Port project in Maharashtra.

By how much has the MSP increased for each crop?
Let’s take a look at how much the MSP has increased for each crop this time.
- According to the current decision, the MSP for rice will be ₹2300 per quintal. This amount is ₹117 more than last year.
- The MSP for cotton will be ₹7121 per quintal, which has increased by ₹501 compared to last year.
- For moong dal, the MSP has been set at ₹8682 per quintal, an increase of ₹124 from last year.
- For urad dal, the MSP will be ₹7400 per quintal, which is ₹450 more than last year.
- The MSP for arhar (pigeon pea) dal will be ₹7550 per quintal, which is ₹550 more than last year.
- The MSP for peanuts will be ₹6783 per quintal, an increase of ₹406 compared to last year.
- The MSP for maize will be ₹2225 per quintal, which is ₹135 more than last year.
- The MSP for sorghum will be ₹3371 per quintal, an increase of ₹191 from last year.
- The MSP for millet will be ₹2625 per quintal, which is ₹125 more than last year.
